Things are going mostly well but I've run into an issue:

I've been working on having all my digital music files in one program (JRiver) but on two computers one at work (master.the one I rip, tag and make changes to) and one at home (using either the same portable drive or an exact copy). Hoping to impose on fellow Forum members with yet another question: If this is something you might want to do I can explain how. Just make sure that it is something you really want and that you may cause JRiver Media Center to respond slower if you do this. It's possible to change the library files location to be on an external drive. The external drive is going to be slower with slower read access times and slower write times. That will let JRiver Media Center have a faster and snappier operation. That way the library files can be loaded faster, searched faster, and work faster. Generally you want the library file to be on your fastest drive. If your goal is to be able to take the external drive back and forth from home to work each day you may want to set it up like this. It is also possible to configure JRiver to save the library database files to the external drive instead of the local C drive. And things like play counts will also be separate for the home computer and work computer. Things like playlists that you create will also be separate for your home computer and work computer. When you take that external drive over to the work computer the work computer will need to import the new files and add them to the library database that is on the local work computer. If you add new music to your external drive at home the new files will be added to the library database that is on your local home computer. The default for JRiver is to save the library database files in your user directory on your C drive. The above setup will have a local library on your home computer and a local library on your work computer.
Restore that library backup on your work computer. The default is to have the library files saved to a JRiver folder in your Documents folderĬopy that backup file to your work computer Get the views and other settings in JRiver set up the way you like them.ĭo a library backup to save your settings. Configure your home computer and work computer so the external drive gets the same drive letter.Ĭopy your music over to the external drive. Use Disk Manager to assign the drive a specific drive letter. Assign it a drive letter like M for music.

Then take that library backup file to your work computer and restore it there.Ĭonfigure Windows so that your external drive always gets the same drive letter every time you plug the drive in. Do a library backup on your home computer. You can get JRiver set up the way you like it on your home computer. You can copy your JRiver settings from one computer and restore them on a different computer. It it as easy to import music from Media Center as it is from iTunes? I'm in radio and that would come in very handy.ģ. Can that same music drive (or a duplicate of that drive) be moved to another computer running Media Center and have it do the same thing? For example one computer at home and one at work. Can I simply buy one large music drive, copy all my iTunes (Apple Lossless, AAC) and flac files to the drive, attach that drive to a computer running Media Center 21 and it be able to recognize the music files?Ģ.

I now want to have one piece of software to play back all my digital files, possibly on several different Windows computers. So, I need a refresher course on what I need to do the bring everything all together.what I can and can't do. But with the release of Media Center 21 I believe this is the version I've been waiting for. And in the past I've almost stopped using iTunes several times but kept going back. And I'm hoping Forum members can help without me going through layers and layers of JRiver wiki.įor years I have been using both iTunes (iTunes 9, actually) and Media Center on several different Windows computers with several different external drives both at home and at work.
