Still, she's a girl, and girls are allowed to scream at surprises. It's an impressive leap, actually making Rikki look pretty cool.Ĭleo's shriek at the jump does not make her seem any cooler. Now we meet our third heroine, Cariba Heine (Rikki) leaps into action, literally, jumping onto the boat from the dock. She acts like someone who gets picked on, while the confident Male #1 is better at this game, showing more confidence and brushing her off without care. Her whole part in the scene, giving in so easily, how she reacts, her tone and body language, this all seems believable. Male #1 (Zane): Looks like you'll have to swim for it.ĬLEO: This isn't happening. Apparently, he was thinking of getting rid of it anyway, and decided the best way to do it was to kick it out to sea with Cleo on board.ĬLEO: Why Me? I didn't steal your spark plug. Male #1 tells her that the boat has a stolen spark plug as Cleo gets his tools, and he proceeds to kick the boat away from the dock. He wants her to pass him his tools as he works on his tiny boat. Cleo seems to wisely not wish to help Male #1. A creepy dude Netlfix subtitles credit as "Male #1" starts calling for Cleo and asks for her assistance. Phoebe walks away along a pier (apparently this is a pool right next to the ocean). My impression is that these are supposed to be close friends. Phoebe seems excited about this swim meet, bouncing a little. We see that Claire Holt (Emma) is the girl in the pool, apparently practicing for a swim meet. Outside the pool is Phoebe Tonkin (Cleo) with a stopwatch, watching the girl and looking happy. We start with a pool and a girl swimming in the pool to soft and pretty background music. That feels like far more attention than the opening credits deserve. The problem is that it cuts too quickly for most of it to register, and most people are not going to focus so much on it. When I dove deep into it, pausing and rewatching several times, I really liked it The imagery is actually pretty good, showing each character doing something interesting and conveying an interesting feel. I think the opening is far too fast paced. Finally we see a heart on a beach and one last scene of our heroines swimming together underwater.

Then we get a random blond dude who is probably a love interest hiking through a cave, looking into a microscope and wearing a silly hat. Brunette is Phoebe Tonkin, who I recognize from CW Drama The Secret Circle where she was one of the best things about it. Smooth haired blond is Claire Holt, a name that's familiar enough to bug me but not familiar enough to recognize.

More individual closeups of the girls in human and mermaid form, this time with names! Slightly messy haired blonde is Cariba Heine. The three girls stand together in human form and clothing, arm in arm. A brunette causes water to rise out of a glass and into her mouth. The first blond stands at the shore and causes water to boil. Then another blond, this one with straighter hair, pushes her hand forward with force and we see ice form on the inside of a lock. Then we cut to what we're really here for! Mermaids darting through the water like torpedoes. Then we get the stylized title, which turns into a bubble transitions to one of the girls (blond, messy hair) as she turns into water and then the water turns into a mermaid. This is followed with two of the girls sitting in the bottom of a cave while a third slides down into them and then the three jumping into an underground pool at the same time before cutting to a reflection of the moon in the same pool, then it cuts to the three girls looking upward. The credits start with three girls (protagonists?) running on the beach in swimsuits, then cuts to them walking in normal clothing with shopping bags, and then a close up scene with each of their faces. Something about the song really conveys a feeling of wild freedom and adventure. I love it, though the version in the opening credits is not my favorite. The theme song is how I found out about this show, actually. They convey mermaids using water based superpowers. Any Youtube links I use also belong to the owners.
